Iowa nurseryman who came over the Oregon Trail in 1847 with a wagonload of grafted fruit trees and, with William Meek, started an orchard and nursery at what became Milwaukie. The Oregon Wine Board credits his plantings with including Oregon's first grapes; he moved to California in 1854.
